Herd Mentality: Is it advantageous ?

Of Late, I read a lot of blogs about the herd mentality in Indian startups. Many people have the opinion that stealing someone's hard thought idea is wrong.

what the hell ? If you feel insecure that ur idea will be implemented by someone else, its just because your idea may not have been implemented in the best possible manner. and thts the reason u thnk, others can come later and overtake you. make sure ur idea is flawless and bug-less and greet ur user with an innovative UI with less time to upload.

If you are coming with a new idea, you have all the chance to become the leader in that segment. If you think u are missing something, have a forum/blog about your site and ask your end users about 1) how useful is the site 2) how is the user interface 3) how u can serve them better. take their comments and, trust me, ur friends want to come back to this site again and thats the reason they r wasting their time saying how u can improve ur site and make money :)

About the herds following you. they always have an advantage. they have a prototype in front of them. they would have used it and know the drawbacks. they will know how it sucks to use ur site. so they are in the better side. they can come with products to overcome the frustating experience of ur site and at the same time provide all benefits u r providing. from an end user perspective, in no time he/she will switch to the new one. Ultimately u r becoming a loser.

So work on the feedbacks provided by ur users. If possible, try to implement the possible suggestions given by them. If you are not clear about their comments, mail them. Thats the only way u can stay in the business.

Note : Yahoo search was there when google came. but after google, none really started thinking much of another search engine, because google is continuosly evolving.

I cant agree to disagree with you. I dont get the point what your are trying to say. Cause no person with a stable mind would say that copying an initial idea is wrong !!!
If there are the so called enterpreuners who crib on his point then poor soul... Though i havnt read anyone say so.

sorry if I was not clear. I am not of the opinion that herd-mentality will be detrimental for starups. Infaact wat I was mentioning , if you are not asking ur users for comments or if ur not trying to implement the implementables, then chances are that others will overtake u. but at the end, its gud from end customer point of view.
